Convention for the Protection of the Architectural Heritage of Europe (1985)

The theme of the Council of Europe is how to protect fast-disappearing architectural heritage from business-driven development.

Preface: The Convention for the Protection of the Architectural Heritage of Europe was adopted by the Council of Europe, Granada, 3 Oct., 1985.

The Convention signed in Granada outlines legislative measures and protections to safeguard the cultural heritage of the European states as well as conservation policies to protect the architectural heritage. Among the recommended measures are:

  • conservation of the architectural heritage as a component of town planning,
  • adaptive reuse of buildings,
  • training in traditional crafts involved in conservation and restoration,
  • limiting public access as a conservation measure,
  • public awareness and educational programs and support for training, and
  • technical assistance and exchange of information.
